EnglishTom Rank, Chair of NATE (The National Association for the Teaching of English) icT committee, says:"Digital literacy is 'as vital as maths and English', a recent article in the Times Educational Supplement proclaimed. Whatever you feel about the future of the book, it's certainly true that digital literacy has a vital role to play in the teaching of English. Students are growing up in an increasingly multimodal world in which the impact of ICT on communication is vast. 2012 will see new proposals for the National Curriculum programmes of study for both primary and secondary English. In its evidence to the consultation, NATE's ICT Committee declared that English teaching now includes a duty 'to educate children in the critical study of media and electronic texts in order that they can become thoughtful creators and consumers of electronic communication. This is a natural extension of the work which English has always undertaken, whether it be the critical reading of a poem or of a newspaper article.'
