The following projects highlight a few activities and business units in this area, implementing best practices.Carbon Neutral ProjectWith the commencement of the Carbon Neutral Project as part of the Clinton Global Initiative Noble Group implemented a step by step emission reduction and offsetting programme throughout the company. In the meantime the company assessed, reduced and offset the Carbon Footprint of our 100+ offices, our beneficiary ships as well our publications and events.In addition we launched a Carbon Neutral brochure in five different languages and a "Going Green" website to raise awareness about climate change among our staff, customers, investors and stakeholders. A Carbon Neutral handbook was published as a guide for the company's internal carbon footprint calculations of business operations. One of the purposes to performing a GHG inventory for us is to identify potential sources for reducing emissions. Through the establishment of a GHG inventory, our major emission sources have been detected, which allows us to define actions. In the last step, to offset all our CO2e that could not be eliminated, we purchased carbon credits. In our selection of projects, such as wind farms in India or energy efficiency projects in China, we targeted projects that in addition to an emission reduction also have co-benefits that positively impact the lives of the people in the communities in which they are located. Noble Carbon Credits also offers a service to their customers to make their companies, supply chains and products Carbon Neutral. In September 2011 Noble Group made the Greener Skies Aviation Conference in Hong Kong a Carbon Neutral Event by offsetting the emissions caused with Carbon Credits (VERs).Noble Carbon Credits and Noble Clean FuelsWhen the European Emission Trading Scheme came into being, Noble Group began to focus increasingly on businesses that contribute to the environment. This is when our Carbon Credits Division was founded. Today Noble Carbon Credits is one of the leading companies in the global emission trading market. We are registered as Project Participant in 130 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects and manage a diverse, risk-reducing supply portfolio. In 2010 Noble Carbon Credits was voted Best Project Developer by Point Carbon, the prime carbon market news organization. Noble Carbon's synergy with Noble Group means customers can depend on high quality execution and the strong balance sheet of the Group. This also allows investments in Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. As for example in the case of a coal mine methane project in the Shanxi province of China where previously vented mine gas is now captured and used for power and heat generation. In addition to a climate change mitigation effect the project also promotes mine safety. Next to the carbon credits team Noble Clean Fuels was founded in 2000 as part of the Groups Energy Division. They have, in reaction to new market demand driven by the political debate on climate change, also started to trade non-fossil fuels.
