Today, morethan half of us call cities our home.Twenty years from now, this figure will have risen tosome 60 per cent, and by the middle of the centuryover two thirds of us will live in urban areas. That issome 3 billion extra city dwellers, most living in rapidlyexpanding conurbations in emerging economies, likeChina, India and also in Africa. Clearly, the sharp rise in the urban population offersgreat opportunities for economic and socialdevelopment. But at the same time it presents citieswith enormous challenges, ranging from cutting backenergy consumption, reducing greenhouse gasemissions, securing reliable energy supply and ensuringpublic safety to maintaining a sense of communityamong an ever-growing number of city dwellers. At Philips, we are committed to helping cities meet thesechallenges. Philips has been at the leading edge of thelighting industry, driving a wave of innovative LEDlighting technologies that offer city authorities a widerange of possibilities for high-quality sustainable lightingthat enable impressive energy savings, especially whencombined with 'intelligent' management and controlsystems, enabled by ICT. Earlier this year, the Malaysian Ministry of Works selectedour highly energy efficient LED lighting solutions to lightup three stretches of roads leading to Subang Airport,Federal Highway and Middle Ring Road 2. This lightingsolution emits high-quality, neutral cool white light,providing visual safety to drivers and motorcyclists. Byswitching to Philips LED technology, the MalaysianGovernment is able to save more than 50 per cent inenergy consumption while cutting its carbon emission inhalf. This helps the Malaysian government realise itsplan to accelerate the implementation of energy-efficient solutions, while at the same time creatingliveable, vibrant and safe city areas. And that is not all. Recent innovations in LED lightingand solar technologies have made it possible forPhilips to offer reliable off-grid solutions that are evenmore sustainable and provide high-quality, cost-efficient lighting using sunlight instead of conventionalelectricity. This highly sustainable solution isespecially valuable for towns and cities around theequator, which can take advantage of the many hoursof sunlight to supplement the capacity of theirconventional electricity grid - and so address theirgrowing concerns about their ability to meet the steepincrease in energy demand. In China, we have lit up the streets of the Guiyangcommunity in partnership with The Climate Group andthe One Foundation. During the day, a solar panelconverts solar energy into electrical energy that is storedin a battery. When night falls, the battery discharges,releasing the power for the LED luminaire to light theroad. It is a tailor-made total solution. We have managedto develop the most effective and cost-efficient solar-driven LED street lighting: an all-in hassle-free solution,including theft prevention, that people can rely on if theelectricity grid fails. and that literally sheds light on thelives of some 1.6 billion people, who do not have accessto the grid, after sunset. For the city of Hangzhou in eastern China, urbanplanners wanted to find a way to bring more areas ofthe city to life, to give its residents outdoor spaceswhere they can breathe and live. Using Philips' LED lighting solutions, these urban planners lit up aniconic section along the city's 2,000-year-old canalsystem, choosing a blue-green colour palette tohighlight the spaces in a dramatic and enchanting way.The versatile LED lights not only use less energy thanthe municipality had originally expected, they havealso transformed the entire area. By "painting the citywith light", they have brought people out of theirhomes to create communities that otherwise would not have existed.
