eeting the twin imperatives of globaleconomic growth and sustainability is ahuge challenge for all of us. As we surveythe environmental landscape, it is clearthat tackling climate change remains the most pressingissue of the modern era - one that requires technologicalsolutions that are effective, scalable and affordable,solutions such as those being developed by Honeywell,a global corporation with human innovation at its core. As delegates gather in Durban for COP17, it is right toask what role technology companies such asHoneywell can play, not just in developing the sciencethat will help reduce greenhouse gases, but in ensuringthat solutions can be implemented around the world.In recent times, there have been some significantpolicy framework developments that should aid theoutreach of technology, notably in laying thefoundation for "operationalising'" the TechnologyMechanism in 2012. This Mechanism, established at the UN Climate ChangeConference in Cancun in December 2010, was part of aset of institutions launched to protect the vulnerablefrom climate change and to deploy the money andtechnology needed by developing countries. It willoperate through the Technology Executive Committeeand the Climate Technology Centre and Network, with a view to sharpening the focus, stepping up the paceand expanding the scope of environmentally-soundtechnology development and transfer.At Honeywell Speciality Materials, we are inventingand applying technologies in tune with the needs forenvironmentally friendlier offerings. We deliver high-performance specialty materials in a broad set ofmarkets and products ranging from refining andpetrochemical production and next-generationbiofuels to ballistic protection and environmentallyfriendlier refrigerants, blowing agents and solvents.CREATING A LOW-CARBON FUTUREHoneywell's business that covers Fluorine Products isfocused not just on low-carbon solutions but oncreating technologies that are near drop-inreplacements for existing fluids and propellants. Thisapproach not only leverages environmental benefits, italso enables easy and more cost-effective adoptionacross industries and across Continents. To us, this equates to doing the right thing and takingthe right steps to create an energy efficient,environmentally compliant, safe and cost effectivefuture -helping governments, industry and commercetransition to new low global warming (LGWP) productsthat meet future regulations and reduce GHG emissions. For example, when the EU called for a moreenvironmentally friendly refrigerant for cars, Honeywellsucceeded in developing a new air conditioningrefrigerant. As a result, not only did we exceed thegoals set politically, we found a long-term, global andenergy-efficient solution - Solstice TM1234yf, a mobilerefrigerant with a GWP100 of only 4, which is 97 percent lower than the mandate of less than 150 (fromJanuary 2011). It is also 99.7 per cent better than theexisting refrigerant (R134a), as well as being a neardrop-in replacement. Solstice 1234yf has an atmospheric lifetime of only11 days, compared to 13 years for R134a and morethan 500 years for CO2. Unlike HFCs and CFCs, whichtake decades to decompose, Solstice 1234yf does notpersist in the atmosphere.
