34Conference+Meetings WorldFebruary 2011PHOTO RANGEWorks in progressEdmonton's venue emeraldThe CAN$150m (US$151m) Edmonton EXPO Centre inCanada has just opened its doors for business.The facility houses 500,000sqm of indoor space and is thelargest venue of its kind in the country, outside of Toronto.Key features of the new venue include; four new exhibitionhalls, a new conference area with meeting rooms andballroom, new gallery spaces connecting the halls andbusiness centre, a food court with licensed services andwireless internet access.Edmonton EXPO's Heather Peckitt says: "The centre hasopened the door for opportunities that weren't previouslyconceivable for Edmonton."Harpa to strike new note in IcelandReykjavik's Harpa concert hall and conference centre isscheduled to open 4 May 2011 and is a design by HenningLarsen Architects and Batteríið. An opening concertconducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy takes place on 13 May.The Portus Group is to run the 28,000sqm complex, and is joint owner with Ago, a company owned by theIcelandic state and the City of Reykjavik.There are four conference spaces. The Concert Hall canseat 1,600, the Conference Hall 750 and the Recital Hall450. A fourth hall on Level Two seats 200 and two moremeeting rooms each seat 63. There is a 1,000sqm exhibitionarea and a 1,500sqm foyer can cater for receptions.Ottawa's unique glass trianglesThe CAN$169m (US$170m) Ottawa Convention Centre is set to open April 2011 and work is underway on the interior.With curves billowing across an acre of glass, the westfacade is made up of 1,036 triangular panes of glass, no two alike. David McMullen, Senior Project Manager for NovumStructures that engineered the glass structures, says everysingle piece of the structure is different. "The complexgeometry of it can only be realised that way," he explains. Novum worked with BBB Architects of Ottawa on the four-level, free-form, transparent structure on Colonel By Drive. The building offers views over the Canal and downtown. On the waterfront: Jekyll Island CCThe 11,891sqm facility in Georgia, USA, is scheduled to opensummer 2012, offering flexible oceanfront function space. It will be able to handle delegate groups up to 3,000 andoffer a 4,180sqm ballroom.The centre will be built to LEED Silver Certified standards.Governor Sonny Perdue attended the New Year start toconstruction of what will be the only oceanfront conventionfacility in the southeast. "This project is already benefitting a reinvigorated coastalGeorgia economy," said Governor Perdue.Construction is expected to take 18 months and will includetwo new hotels.
