CITY FOCUS KINTEX ( the Korea International Exhibition Centre), is situated in Goyang area, a green convention and exhibition satellite city 20 minutes outside the capital. Phil Chung, KINTEX international sales and marketing manager, tells CMW about the venue's plans for future business development. How does KINTEX market itself? Through a network of overseas sales representatives, Korean associations and organisations, as well as travel agencies and destination marketing companies ( DMCs). It also uses Kotra, the Korea trade promotion and investment agency, and its business centres ( KBCs) all over the world. We promote ourselves via associations such as UFI, IAEE and ICCA. Our MICE packages for international conference organisers include some special ' incubating' rates, as well as promotion support. There is also financial and administrative sponsorship available from our central and local governments. Who are KINTEX and Korea's main competitors? As fa r as competing venues, I would number Singaporean, Chinese and Thai venues, first and foremost, but basically we compete with hundreds of venues in the US, Germany and Asian countries, not to mention Australian venues. We offer one- stop- destination solutions, along with strong government support to all international conference organisers, which includes an affiliate hotel programme and highly-competitive MICE/ tourism packages. KINTEX works with regional tourism organisation ( Gyeonggi Tourism Organisatio n) and city governments in Goyang and Seoul to attract rotating international corporate and association conventions and incentives. We use financial sponsorship and administrative support for advertising, PR, accommodation, protocols and resolving VISA related matters. How has KINTEX dealt with the effects of the global recession? We've cut some redundant businesses and focused on growth engines; our ROI- based management has increased sales net- profit for five years running. 18July/ August 2010 Conference+ Meetings World www. c- mw. net We've also been doing our best to co- locate some conferences and events from similar sectors. For instance, we have been attracting automobile related international conferences during the Motor Show or Autoparts and aftermarket service fairs. The International Food exhibition has also proved a useful draw for food and hotel related conferences. And we have put international tourism events into our existing local tourism exhibitions and meetings. This has all increased synergies for both buyers and visitors. We are trying to co- locate the world's largest gaming event and conference with the big Korea Electronics Show. Which international conference organisers do you work with and what have been some of your best events of the past year? We've been working with several international core- PCOs, DMCs, travel agencies and government bodies, including: . The Taiwan Amway leadership seminar 2007, which brought in 1,300 delegates . Herbalife Extravaganza 2009, which brought more than 20,000 people to Korea . The Unification Church convention 2005 and 2006 ( 50,000 people per each year) . The Nano convention 2010, for which we expect 2,000 delegates IUMRS-ICEM 2010: 2,000 expected . The Korea Rotary convention 2008 brought 10,000 delegates and the Rotary International convention booked in for 2016 is expected to bring 50,000 delegates ( to be split between KINTEX and COEX - ed). The 2nd phase of KINTEX is scheduled for completion in September 2011, enabling the venue to provide more than 108,000sqm for indoor space. The current venue offers up to 55,000sqm under one roof and the indoor delegate capacity of 50,000 might even be a world record, because even though there are some venues which are bigger, very few venues can open up the whole space as one venue under one roof. The completion of the second KINTEX venue, we expect, will mean we can develop our conference proposition further into the global conference market. Seoul city limits: . Seoul is the capital and largest city in the Republic of South Korea . Population: 10m in the city and 24.5m in the Seoul National Capital Area, which includes the Incheon metropolis and the Gyeonggi province . Currency: Won ( KRW). Rate US$ 1 = KRW 1,198 . Seoul is No. 2 convention destination in Asia and No. 9 globally according to the Union of International Associations . Seoul is No. 3 in Asia and No. 11 worldwide according to the ICCA rankings. . Korea has three major international airports. KINTEX comment
