April 2012 . 5incoln and Manchester sit at different ends of the scale in the university venue market, but both illustrate the attraction of the sector.Suzanne Etherington organises meetings at the EMMTEC Auditorium at the University of Lincoln and says the venue's bread and butter meetings business is local. "We are fi nding an increasing trend for use of our seminar rooms for corporate training, possibly because local businesses cut their on-site training and offi ce space in the recession," she says. During term-time business is mostly corporate, but when the students leave campus residential conferences can move in."Conferences are springing up closer to the proposed date than previously, she notes, as shorter lead times prevail. "People try to get as much as possible for as little as possible. This puts us in a diffi cult position and we are now re-evaluating our rates to include an hourly charge. We don't want to under-sell," Etherington says. For two years the University has worked with the Social Policy Association to organise its annual conference, which last July brought 252 delegates for three days. "The climate in funding for academics to attend conference is dramatically reducing," Etherington notes, "providing a challenge when managing a tightly packed programme of parallel papers and conference withdrawals due to funding and visa constraints." Over at Manchester University, one of the country's largest, a major investment programme continues at the venues, including at University Place which can host conferences for 1,000 delegates. This summer, the Renold building on the city centre campus, gets a £3.4m refurbishment of its largest lecture theatres and three seminar rooms, increasing the capacity of the largest to 530. Summer 2011 brought three Royal Society of Chemistry conferences to Manchester, the International Pragmatics conference and the European Aerosol Conference. The University also offers year-round venues for smaller meetings and as Layton Quinton, Marketing Manager, says: "We have seen a signifi cant shift towards one day meetings with smaller budgets and delegate numbers, often booked last minute".
