UBMcontinuedto move its focus away from print publishingwith the sale of its UK licensed trade portfolio, along with 14 staff, to William Reed. Thedeal consists of an initial cash considerationof £1.5m and further deferred performance-related considerations of up to £150,000. The portfolio includes The Publicanmagazine, websites and awards event, together with the Theme and Bar Showbrands. UBM originally bought thepublications in 2005 from Quantum BusinessMedia for £21m.UBMrationalised its print portfolio furtherwith the sale of 62.9 per cent of its ?40m(£34.17m) revenue French medicalnewspaper and magazine business to amanagement buyout teamin a deal valuedat ?13m including funding of ?6m made tothe MBO team. The print titles were originally acquired fromMediMedia in 2005, together with HospitalExpo and the MEDEC conference for ?36m. On the acquisition side, UBMcontinues toconsolidate its position in India with theacquisition ofSATTE, the main travel andtourism show and 60 per cent of the Famdentdental exhibition and conference business. UBM seems to have built a business in Indiawhere others have failed and it is particularlyinteresting to see that acquisitions arepossible. We constantly receive feedbackfrom purchasers that the price expectationsof a number of independent Indian organisersare unrealistic.Meanwhile Reedhas strengthened itsmarket-leading position in Brazil with theacquisition of Sao Paulo organiser MultiplusFairs and Events. The main events in the portfolio serve therenewable energy sector and are a strategicaddition to Reed's existing events in thissector. The energy sector is pretty busy rightnow in terms of M&A and I wouldn't besurprised to see a few more propertieschange hands in coming months. Not content with acquiring MVK inMoscow recently, ITE Groupadded toits Russian portfolio by acquiringKrasnodar Expofor the equivalent of£8.8m, a multiple of 4.5 x 2010 profits.Krasnodar Expo runs a number of showsin a variety of sectors includingconstruction, agriculture, travel and tourismand automotive. This is a regional, south-of-Russia play forITE which already runs its own shows at theKrasnodar Expo Exhibition Centre. There was a bit of a rumpus in HongKong when Sage International(formerly Info Communication) had toexplain to the HK Stock Exchangewhy it agreed to sell its exhibitionbusiness to original founder, EddieLeung, for HK$3m (£237,947)despite being offered HK$6m byGlobal Sources.Leungoriginally sold his stake in InfoCommunication in 2007 forHK$53M.
