How do they do it? P18 Centaur Exhibitions has reiterated the need for its new hosted buyer-led show addressing the UK meetings industry after the announcement was met with "disappointment" by prospective rival, International Confex. The new Meetings Show UK will be launched at Olympia from 9 to 11 July 2013 with meetings industry veteran, Paul Kennedy, MBE, as its strategic advisor. Centaur MD Andrew Evans said its four-fold strategy is to: Lead with an uncompromising hosted buyer proposition; support it with an education programme; create high-calibre networking opportunities; and drive the product with meetings professionals, not exhibition organisers. The major selling point of the new show is its promise to bring 1,000 hosted buyers to the UK. Centaur claims the show follows months of careful research. The organiser followed up the launch during the opening day of Confex by appointing former Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) project director Steve Knight as its event director. Knight has a long track record in the meetings sector and was mostly recently project director on the AIBTM meetings industry show. Knight will sit alongside Kennedy and sales director Katy Phelps, who comes from Centaur's Business Travel Show team. Evans hoped to appoint a sales manager to The Meetings Show UK team shortly and is compiling an advisory show board plus a board for its education programme. Confex portfolio director Jonny Sullens labelled news of Centaur's Meeting Show UK launch "disappointing" and claimed the industry's budgets weren't big enough to support another competing show. However, Evans claimed his Meeting Show UK wasn't directly competitive with UBM's Confex due to its hosted buyer focus."The UK is the second most important meetings destination in Europe - why shouldn't we have a credible meetings show? Confex is not it," Evans claimed.- Check out EN's in-depth report on The Meetings Show UK on page 16.INSIDEFINDING FRESH TALENTHow can the industry attract more talented individuals?
