While they were reaching once again for their beach towels and making the most of a difficult situation, many of us were trying to reach exhibitions or man stands in scenes reminiscent of the 1965 comedy classic, The Great Race. Because while we rightly consider ourselves to be some of the world's greatest eventmakers, Mother Nature witholds the right to create the greatest shows on earth, shows that demand our attention, even if we've got no desire to attend. Okay, we can revise our insurance policies to be as comprehensive as possible, and impress upon our exhibitors a thoughtful contingency plan that demonstrates our commitment to their satisfaction. But if the giant cloud of ash - that according to the IATA cost the airlines US£ 1.7bn in lost business - taught us anything, it's that there are some activities you can never truly prepare for.
