Profile PricewaterhouseCoopersNew product trials key to cutting carbon footprintPricewaterhouseCoopers looks to electric cars, river transport and car sharing to reduce CO2By Debbie WoodPricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) continues to make impressive strides in its ambition to keep reducing the company's environmental impact.With an aspiration to be the front runner for envi­ronment initiatives, PWC has embarked on several transport schemes to reduce its carbon footprint. One of these key initiatives is a new agreement with the Thames Clipper, which provides river trans­port, to enable employees to get to other offices which are situated on the river's embankment.PWC is also trialling car sharing in the east midlands and will also have two electric vehicles at the firm's central London offices."We recognise our impact is in our buildings and resources. The only way we can reduce this is by trial­ling new products," said Mark Avery, head of business services at PWC. The PWC fleet is made up solely of salary sacrifice vehicles, approximately 2,500 vehicles in total. The company runs an open choice salary sacrifice scheme with a 200g/km CO2 cap. Early termina­tions are fully protected. If a driver leaves the firm voluntarily, they pay four months of the fee; if they are made redundant, PWC picks up the bill.PWC does not enforce a lower CO2 cap because Avery believes the market is driving emissions down on its own. "Tax is becoming a key driver for car choice. Our average CO2 figure across the fleet last year was 147g/km, now already it has fallen to 140g/km. The order bank average is down to 120g/km," he said.PWC believes educating drivers is key to reducing emissions, that once the environment becomes part of the driver's psyche, it will soon become normal practice.With the economic challenges, the past year did see defleeting figures rise as employees chose not to have a car. However, as the economy recovers, the fleet has stabilised and this year PWC has taken 25% more vehicle orders than 2010.To further help reduce the company's carbon foot­print, PWC has set up a rental agreement with Hertz to further expose electric vehicles to their employees who are looking to use a company pool car."Hertz approached us 18 months ago about the introduction of EVs and we wanted to be part of that but in a way that worked for our business model. It's Connect by Hertz technology works really well and removes the administration strain," said Avery.Connect by Hertz enables multiple keyless entries and every driver is given a card which is allocated to a particular vehicle. The technology enabled PWC to see where the car was going and what the drivers were doing,"Most people worry about the range of electric vehicles, but for city travel 90 miles is a good range.
