by Joan Krzykowski Sunshine Booksellers 677 S. Collier Blvd., Marco Island, Florida, 34145 Author of Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd writes a memoir with her daughter, exploring their relationship as it is revealed through their travels in France, Greece and Turkey. That information was enough to pique my interest in reading this book and it is no disappointment. " Traveling With Pomegranates" features Kidd and fi rst- time author Ann Kidd Taylor alternating chapters as they tell their story. This book particularly hit home with me, as I too have been on a journey this past year with my own mother. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago and it has been a journey of loss and discovery. I could relate to many aspects of the mother- daughter relationship in this book, as I think all women will. Whether you fi nd yourself identifying with the mother or the daughter, or, as I did, alternating between the two, the struggles and insights are classic. The book begins in Greece and we relearn the story of Demeter and her daughter Persephone as Sue and Ann view a bas- relief of Demeter. In Greek myth, Persephone is abducted by the lord of the dead and her mother is seeking her. Persephone does return, but only after swallowing pome-granate seeds, meaning she must return to the underworld for part of each year. At this point, Kidd was feeling dis-tant from her daughter, having grown apart over her years away at college. I don't want to spoil it for you, as the beautifully written book is best discovered in each one's own manner, but the story follows the path of a deepening and reawakening connection between mother and daughter. Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter, Ann Kidd Taylor will be at Sunshine Booksellers on: Tuesday, February 16, 2010 from 1: 00 to 3: 00 p. m. They will be talking about their book, answering questions and available to sign books. All are invited to attend. BOOK SIGNING |
