www.nadfas.org.ukNADFAS REVIEW / AUTUMN201053PRIVATE VIEW the newly-discovered Burges textilesand that he hoped that 10 of the panelsmight be replicated, the originals beingtoo fragile for display. At the time wewere renovating some 17th-centurycurtains at Madresfield Court, but beingaware that that project would soon end,I approached Matthew to discuss thepossibility of our taking on the job ofreplicating the hangings. Before wecould come up with a plan of action,Matthew asked if we would consider asmaller, but similar project first, that ofreplicating a bedcover, also by Burges, for the Marquess of Bute's bed. Thisproject was for a highly decorated andcolourful quilt created with velvet, spangles and gilt threads and was quitea challenge. It took three years tocomplete. We barely had time to drawbreath before Matthew was asking if wewould still take on the hangings project!"Any project like this takes months ofpreparation -undertaking research intooriginal dyes, materials andmethodology, as well as threads to bematched and stitched. The hangingswere described in the Castle Inventoryof 1920 as Indian crewelled serge walldrapery, lined and edged with a fringeand valued at £105. Experts at the V&A,delighted at seeing one of the fewexamples of Burges's textiles inexistence, identified the materials asBritish rather than Indian, and probablycommissioned by Burges from a teamof London contracting decorators."When it came to the project, locatingsuitable serge was our first task andWhalleys of Bradford came up with anexcellent version. A company of dyers inHarrogate produced a match for thebrown stripes, both with the initialsamples and then with the final roll offabric. Then work got under way. Wechose Appleton Wools and have beenhappy with the application. A very goodlocal weaver, Colin Squires, made us atrial fringe and after a few adjustmentshe made the full length we needed.Colin also made a green braid at thebottom of the hangings, which provedquite a challenge, as it couldn't be madeon a normal weaving frame. At onestage Colin had the length stretchedfrom one end of the house to the other!"After seven years, the set of 10hangings were completed, coincidingwith the completed restoration of theSitting Room. Matthew has introducedfurnishings that allow a display in theinterior to be appreciated as Lord Buteand William Burges had intended."
