When Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin setout to revive the Olympic Games in1894, his goal was to do more thanestablish a modern sporting competition. His ambitionwas to create an international movement that wouldpromote an integrated culture of athleticism andeducation, position sport as a model for peace andharmony, and safeguard a set of values that extend wellbeyond the playing field. He saw these Olympic valuesas critical to distinguishing the Olympic Games from allother sporting events and, more importantly, tounderpinning all of the Olympic Movement's activities. Coubertin's foresight has paid off. Today, theOlympic values of excellence, friendship and respectare the heart and soul of the Olympic Movement. Theypermeate every action and decision. The sustainabilityof these values over time has not only elevated thediscipline of sport on a world stage, but has alsoplayed a major role in the Olympic Movement's long-term success. Above all, the values Coubertinespoused 113 years ago continue to shape a globaldialogue on the role of sport in society today. ?RightThat sportshould play animportant part inchildren'seducation was afundamentalbelief of Pierre deCoubertin, thefounder of themodern OlympicMovementOLYMPIC VALUESTHEOLYMPICVALUESSTEVEN MAASSEXAMINES HOW THEOLYMPIC MOVEMENT DEFINES ITS COREVALUES OF EXCELLENCE, FRIENDSHIP ANDRESPECT AND HOW THESE VALUES UNDERPIN ALL OF ITS ACTIVITIES TODAY
