She has heldthis post since 2004.The IOC MedicalCommission has createdan ad hoc workinggroup on athlete bodycomposition, health and performance toaddress these issues asthey relate to sports inwhich weight plays amajor role. It met for thefirst time, in October inGraz (Austria). Sport was officially recognised as an importanttool for education, development and peace byworld leaders during a summit on the MillenniumDevelopment Goals (MDGs) that took place inNew York from 20 to 22 September. The role ofsport to "promote cooperation and solidarity,tolerance, understanding, social inclusion, andhealth, at local, national, and international levels"was mentioned in the official outcome documentof this high-level United Nations (UN) meeting,which aimed to assess and accelerate the effortsmade towards achieving the eight global goals bythe deadline of 2015.Nawal El Moutawakel, an Olympic championand IOC Executive Board member, addressed theUN General Assembly on behalf of the IOC andsaid: "The Olympic Movement -the IOC, theInternational and National Sports Federations andthe 205 National Olympic Committees -is usingthe power of sport to promote the MDGs incountries across the world and cooperate to thisend with all sectors, from governments to UNagencies, funds and programmes, NGOs, thebusiness community and civil society at large.While we indeed are doing our best, we are fullyaware that more must and can be done. All of usin sport can and must do more. This is a clarioncall to sports organisations and the billions ofsportspersons, their supporters and fansthroughout the world, to play their part."UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said: "Weuse sport in many of our programmes. Some ofthe world's greatest athletes are helping us toraise awareness of important issues, such ashunger, HIV/AIDS, gender equality, education andenvironmental care." He added: "Here at theMDG Summit, we will hear much talk about theneed for stronger partnerships in making theGoals a reality. Sport exemplifies that very spirit:teamwork. fair play. people collaborating fora common goal." CONFERENCEON PREVENTIONOF INJURYAND ILLNESSINSPORTUNOFFICIALLYRECOGNISES SPORT The 2011 IOC World Conference on Prevention ofInjury and Illness in Sport will be held in Monte-Carlo, Monaco, from 7 to 9 April 2011. The eventis designed as a continuation of the 1st and 2ndWorld Congresses on Sports Injury in 2005 and2008, but will be organised for the first time bythe IOC in collaboration with the Principality, andwill also look beyond injuries by including thetopic of prevention of other health problemsassociated with sports participation.Recognised scientists and practitioners fromthe medical and sports worlds will review anddiscuss the latest developments, risk factors andprevention programmes and assess the need forfurther research into the prevention of athletes'injuries and illnesses. The idea is to combineforces in order to identify and minimise riskfactors in sport and maximise safe sportsparticipation. The final programme reflects themulti-disciplinary approach and covers a widerange of topics, featuring as many as 94 inivitedspeakers for keynote lectures and symposia at the three-day Conference.
