events, maximising the opportunities for visitors to makenew discoveries and connections.Annecy 2018 will give athletes, officials, commercialpartners, the media and every member of the OlympicFamily an authentic experience, with the uniqueatmosphere that comes from short journey times andgenuine Alpine hospitality. Spectators and televisionviewers, and indeed all Savoyards, will enjoy aspectacular celebration, in stunning locations. At thesame time, our Games will consider and protect thefinite resources that every Olympic Winter Games mustcherish and preserve for the future.A BLUEPRINT FOR THEMOUNTAINS OF THE 21STCENTURY Our region has been guided and shaped by Olympism. The 1924 Olympic Games in Chamonix provided the firstfoundation stone of a fantastic development movement in winter sport, in the French Alps, now one of theleading winter tourist destinations in the world. Moreimportantly, its status as the first Winter Games providedthe blueprint for subsequent events, and the templatefrom which to grow.Almost 100 years later, winter sports and the Gameshave grown and evolved beyond the imagination of those involved a century ago. Winter sport has gotbigger and bigger - while our mountains, and their snowand ice, have become more precious, and our understanding of our shared responsibility to protectthem has also grown. Now, we need to evolve a new vision - one that also delivers sustainable, economic growth. For this to happen, there needs to be a radical change in the way we think about development, so that we can build a model for future generations that reconciles progress with the conservation of our natural heritage. The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a source of inspiration, a fantastic catalyst for energieseverywhere and a powerful driver of change. By hosting the greatest winter sport event in the world,Annecy wants to accelerate its move towardssustainable, year-round tourism and, more broadlyspeaking, to lay new foundations for the relationshipbetween Man and mountain. ?OLYMPIC REVIEW472018 CANDIDATE CITIESVENUES MAPLeftGames for the future and a new generation Below leftBetween the eternal snows of Mont-Blancand the clear waters of Lake Annecy
