DAN JANSENAmerican speedskater Dan Jansen was the hot favourite for500m gold when he arrived at the 1988 Winter Games inCalgary. But hours before the race, his sister passed away.He still competed but fell early in the race and then again in the 1,000m. Having failed to reach the podium in 1992 inAlbertville, Jansen had one last chance of Olympic glory at the1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer. He finished eighth in the 500m before entering the 1,000m with little hope of amedal, but set a new world record. He received his goldmedal with daughter Jane, named after his sister, in his arms.THEOLYMPICSPIRIT
