Multi- disciplinary collaborative design At the AVEVA Symposium of Integrated Plant Engineering System in 2009, Shanxi Electric Power Exploration & Design Institute gave a presentation on multi- disciplinary collaborative design. Case studies on two projects were presented: a 2 × 600MW plant project in Huozhou, and a 2 x 300MW plant project in Linfen. Shanxi selected AVEVA PDMS in 2000 for a host of reasons: it provided comprehensive database support, sound engineering data management, a unified design workflow control, and professional support from AVEVA. The application also facilitated the exchange and management of information, presenting a platform where designers and personnel could to work together even though they were separated physically, and by departments and disciplines. The collaboration that took place across the various disciplines involved those in the boiler, hydraulics, electrical, thermal, coal, HVAC, chemical, ash removal and other divisions. Through this collaboration and the use of AVEVA PDMS, the benefits Shanxi reported were: . 20- 30% reduction in design time . zero clashes . 10- 30% reduction in time for design modification . improvement in project productivity and material utilisation . reduction in material wastage through improved design . tool for project management support . easy access to operation and maintenance data. Using AVEVA PDMS within the two projects, complete and accurate digital information models of the projects were obtained. These asset- oriented and integrated models will benefit Shanxi, as they contain a collection of historical data and documents to support and manage the full lifecycle of the plants. AVEVA NET in modelling The company received an EPC contract for 2 × 330MW flue gas desulphurisation engineering projects at the Liupanshan power plant. Using AVEVA NET, simulation of the construction could be demonstrated, as well as simulation of the maintenance process. The operation carried out in AVEVA Review could be replicated in AVEVA NET. The following figures indicate the plant tour at two different time points. 3D Model within AVEVA NET - the level of detail is well suited to users' needs. Zooming in - AVEVA NET's unique visualisation capabilities deliver bandwidth- efficient 3D imagery that can be easily shared and manipulated over the Internet. It can also be used in modelling, to simulate maintenance works, which is particularly useful for Owner Operators, enabling new employees to understand the construction and operations processes of the plants. Furthermore, AVEVA NET is open- sourced, enabling customisation to fit the needs of the organisation. AVEVA PIPELINE | 2010 Issue 2 | Page 23 In 1989, AVEVA's predecessor marine company set up operations in Shanghai, China. A year later, the company welcomed its first customer - Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. In the following years, customers signing up to AVEVA's marine solutions included Hudong- Zhonghua Shipbuilding ( Group) Corporation ( 1993), Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute ( 1993), Guangzhou Shipyard International ( 1994), Jiangnan Shipyard ( 1995), Marine Design & Research Institute of China ( 1995) and Bohai Shipbuilding Industry ( 1996). Within a short time, AVEVA solutions have gained the trust of Chinese shipyards for the design of the most complex of vessels. Today, shipyards such as Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, Guangzhou Shipyard International, Jiangnan Shipyard and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Corporation place their trust in AVEVA solutions during the design and production phases of every vessel built within their yards. 20 years, and over 60 customers later, the AVEVA brand name is synonymous with solutions for ship design within the umbrella groups of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, China State Shipbuilding Corporation and COSCO Shipyard Group, as well as new- generation shipyards and offshore companies made up of provincial/ municipal, joint- venture and privately- owned shipyards and companies such as Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries Group, New Century Shipbuilding Co., Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co., and Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group. 1989- 2009: 20 years of shared growth, from 1 million to 60 million DWTs in annual shipbuilding capacity In 1989, China's shipbuilding throughput was less than one million DWTs. This increased exponentially and now, after only twenty years, the nation's goal of becoming the world's top shipbuilder is fast becoming a reality as annual shipbuilding capacity has grown to over 60 million DWTs. China's amazing achievement was accomplished with a clear shipbuilding strategy focused on strengthening the industry's design capability, marine equipment supply and large- scale shipbuilding construction, and on optimising three main ship types: bulk- carriers, oil tankers, and container vessels, while also increasing their capabilities in the production of hi- tech ships. Throughout this period, AVEVA has matched China's lofty shipbuilding aspirations by investing resources locally. The team that started out with Josephine Zhou Chun ( head of the AVEVA China Marine team) and three technical employees, has now grown to 33, based in AVEVA's new Marine Centre in Shanghai. AVEVA continues to increase its technical resources by expanding the team, and also helps to build up shipbuilding human capital by offering training at its two new training centres. These centres are essential in view of the greater number of customers subscribing to the company's solutions, as well as the new products becoming available. Of the world's twenty- five top shipyards, ten are from China, and nine of those are AVEVA customers. Apart from AVEVA Marine, AVEVA NET, AVEVA's product lifecycle management solution, is also being implemented in several shipyards, complementing AVEVA Marine to provide customers with a complete design, production and information management solutions package. AVEVA will continue to extend the company's experience and ability to support customers in China by growing the local team, as well as tapping into AVEVA's global resource pool. Celebrating with new and old friends To commemorate AVEVA's 20th anniversary in China, a get- together was organised where AVEVA's long- term customers were invited to discuss, with AVEVA and amongst peers, the industry's achievements and issues from the past 20 years, as well as to explore future opportunities for cooperation. 32 delegates, representing top management from 15 yards, attended the event at Ningbo, Zhejiang, China at the end of August 2009. AVEVA has gradually grown its customer base to include nine out of ten top Chinese shipyards. The company has made a two-decade- long journey to become the preferred solutions provider of China's shipbuilding industry, and it now shares this achievement by celebrating with customers, partners and friends. AVEVA stands at the forefront of China's shipbuilding industry Page 24| AVEVA PIPELINE | 2010 Issue 2 Marketing Communications AVEVA Asia Pacific |
