' State Industrial Design and Consultation Company ( SIDCCO), one of the largest engineering contractors in Iraq, offers services - ranging from feasibility studies to turnkey constructions - to companies within the chemical, petrochemical, power and fertiliser processing industries. Ministry of Industry and Mineral companies, Ministry of Oil companies and the Ministry of Electricity are among the company's biggest clients,' says Ali Al- Naama, SIDCCO's Director General. ' The expansion of the oil industry in Iraq will demand many large- scale, industrial, design and construction projects including refineries, natural gas and petrochemicals plants, hundreds of storage tanks for crude oil, and products for improving surface oil facilities. SIDCCO is keen to play a full part in these projects, particularly in engineering, detail design, procurement and construction. Because Iraq is such a promising market, SIDCCO is aware of the importance of global project execution and aims to form successful partnerships with leading EPC contractors worldwide.' Ali Al- Naama continued, ' We realised that, to be able to strengthen our position in Iraq and to develop worldwide partnerships, we had to move from our current 2D design system to a 3D solution. By doing this, we would further increase efficiency in the design process, enabling concurrent working between different design disciplines. This led us to investigate more advanced engineering systems, offering better integration of engineering tools and the ability to manage large quantities of data. ' When we were using 2D technology we often found limitations in clash detection, and also that necessary information for fabrication and construction was missing. This frequently led to costly rework due to design modifications late in the design process. With AVEVA Plant's engineering and business benefits, we look forward to increasing productivity and making full use of our manpower to reach an optimum speed of project execution. ' Systems from Intergraph, Bentley and AVEVA were evaluated. We chose the AVEVA Plant solutions, as AVEVA met our technical requirements for completely integrated engineering and design solutions which are both object oriented and cost effective. SIDCCO is currently bidding on multiple projects, including offsite water treatment plants for three refineries, with waste and water treatment, tanks and interconnecting piping, as well as civil and electrical projects. We also plan to use AVEVA Plant for integrated engineering and design. ' SIDCCO implemented AVEVA Plant solutions around April 2010, after intensive training in March to enable its staff to make maximum use of a range of AVEVA Plant products for various project stages. The first planned project is a blending plant in the Basrah Free Zone, designed for one of Iraq's private sector companies, producing additives for the oil drilling industry. This is a small- scale, USD 10 million project. Our participation will initially be focused on basic detailed engineering using AVEVA Plant solutions. Thereafter, we will be involved with assisting in procurement, then construction of the project. ' Secondly, two industrial waste- water treatment projects are planned, one in Baghdad and the other in Amara, in southern Iraq, for the Iraqi General Company for Vegetable Oil Production. Here, SIDCCO will develop the necessary technology on behalf of the end- user, then move on to basic detailed engineering, procurement and construction. The value of this project is USD 18 million. ' Thirdly, we will be using AVEVA PDMS for detailed engineering design work for the South Refinery Company ( SRC), linking their oil storage area with their new process units, as well as with their utility units,' Ali Al- Naama concluded. About SIDCCO State Industrial Design and Consultation Company ( SIDCCO), is a government company, wholly owned by the Ministry of Industry and Minerals of the Republic of Iraq. SIDCCO was established in 1987 under the name of TECHORPS, and grew through the development of Petrochemical Complex No. 2, to the south of Baghdad. SIDCCO currently employs 1,050 employees, and has offices in Baghdad, Basrah, and Baiji in Iraq. The company provides services to the oil & gas, petrochemical and power industries, and to civil engineering works. Further information can be found at www. sidcco- iraq. com. AVEVA employees receive theFIATECH STAR Award On March 30, FIATECH hosted the CETI ( Celebration of Engineering & Technology Innovation) Gala, in conjunction with its 2010 Technology Conference and Showcase in Austin, Texas. During that ceremony, the Superior Technical Achievement Awards ( STAR) were awarded to Jim Klein and Phil Robins from AVEVA and to twelve other outstanding individuals who provided critical support and valuable contributions to FIATECH in 2009. As a result of their leadership, commitment and technical competence, FIATECH was able to produce valuable tools, products and technological developments that benefitted the entire capital projects industry. In FIATECH's words: Jim Kleinhas worked tirelessly and doggedly on behalf of FIATECH almost since its inception. He's worked on projects, managed and co-managed projects, served on Roadmap Committees and teams, and served as an advisor to FIATECH staff. Most recently, he managed, in a yeoman like way, the administrative functions for the FIATECH Proteus Project that brought together the FIATECH software suppliers to find ways to drive the ISO 15926 standard into implementation in their products. Jim's naturally statesmanlike ways ensured that the jobs got done, the meetings were held successfully, the team stayed on target and everyone continued to work together, even though they were all from software companies that competed with one another. For Jim's extraordinary efforts to help FIATECH help the industry, Jim has earned the STAR. Phil Robinsis project manager of the Proteus ISO 15926 implementation project. By hard work and with a positive approach he succeeded in shepherding seven diverse organizations to deliver a single coherent project. Such coordinating work is always the harder when organizations are providing volunteer effort that is over and above normal " day jobs." Not only did Phil hold the diverse components of the Proteus team together and help them achieve a critical mass, he also ensured that AVEVA's P& ID solutions conformed to the Proteus specifications and the FIATECH definitions of ISO 15926 compliance.
