56GARDENS?SUMMER 2012WWW.NTS.ORG.UKWith his wife, Sue, George has created the garden, providing a key to the artists and discreetly labellingtheir sculptures as well as dealing with publicity and allthe complex arrangements of displaying work. WhenI visit he is looking forward to the imminent arrivalof a huge seven-ton work by renowned Scottishsculptor Ronald Rae, which is to be placed on a grassverge just in front of the formal garden."Rae's sculpture is made from a unique piece ofrock," he tells me. "Black basalt fused with pink andgrey granite. It depicts St Francis carried by a bird onone side and on the other the figure of 'brotherwolf' from the tale of St Francis."Aside from negotiating the installation of the Rae,George and Sue have been dealing with the curatingof a show by 12 Scottish sculptors, which opens inthe garden on 23 June. Most of the works on displayare by local artists, from Peter Dowden's simple, primitiveforms to Kath Mayo's driftwood mirrorsand Dawn Rhodes's Red Kite. Returning to the gate, down the north side, yourattention is taken by two of the most striking pieceshere; a pair of neo-classical figures created by LucianneLasalle. Echoing the sculpture gardens of the 18thcentury, they also make a knowing nod to the passionfor the connoisseur's bitter-sweet delight in the ravagesof time on genuine treasures of antiquity. The Thomases have done an impressive job. Aproject such as this has to be carefully managed andthe last thing the Trust would want is to interfere witha landscape or garden that is already carefully planned. But Threave offers the perfect setting and an idealopportunity.George says: "When people passed the FormalGarden before the sculpture arrived, they would just"Threave offers the perfect setting and an ideal opportunity"The Hepworth-likepierced form, above, was already atThreave, where it hasbeen joined byElizabeth Waugh'sCouple, right?
