Closing date: 15 August 2012SPRING is an important time in any garden, but this photograph, taken in brilliant sunshineon 9 May 1953, captures a significant moment, when the Trust gratefully accepted one of itsmost spectacular properties, Inverewe.Mairi Sawyer, who had spent the previous30 years developing and tending the gardencreated by her father, Osgood Mackenzie, stands beside the seated Lord Wemyss, whowas then the Trust's chairman of council, andwho became its president in 1967.She consults her notes as she formally handsover to the charity's care the magnificent gardenthat had been legally transferred the previousyear - which is why the Trust is celebratingInverewe's 60th anniversary this year. In the background a young girl looks on,perhaps realising something special is happening, but unsure what it is.Lady Elphinstone, convener of the Trust'sgardens committee, on left of picture, acceptedMrs Sawyer's generous gift on theorganisation's behalf. Also shown are, fromleft, Lady Macmillan and the Countess of Stair. It was the first time the Trust had taken on agarden in its own right - testament toInverewe's significance, and also to the heroiceffort put into it by Osgood Mackenzie, who, from 1862 took on moor and bog in which, hewrote, just two tiny dwarf willows grew. He set about transforming the site withretaining walls, terraces, soil and the plantingof many hundreds of trees - Scots andCorsican pines, birch, rowan, oak and beechamong them. When he died in 1922 his daughter continuedthe task, making many improvements andbuilding the terraced rock garden that remainsone of Inverewe's best-loved features.Guests at the event included about 160passengers who had arrived on the Trust's firstgardens cruise on board the Lady Killarney, which had docked at the old jetty nearInverewe House.Mairi Sawyer told guests that the existenceof the plants thriving there, collected from allover the world, "would not be possible withoutthe loving care bestowed on them by mygardeners". Inverewe, she added, would be apermanent memorial to her father. She died quite unexpectedly only weeksafter this ceremony, but the sun still oftenshines on the once-barren peninsula that sheand her father turned into the place of beautythat visitors of all ages continue to enjoy. From the archiveThe handover of Inverewe, 1953By Don Currie
