38OLYMPIC REVIEW VANCOUVER 2010 TAKINGTHE TEMPERATURE BONNIE ROBBGETS OUT AND ABOUT IN VANCOUVER TO DISCOVER WHAT THE RESIDENTS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO WITH LESS THAN A YEAR UNTIL THE START OF THE 2010 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES OLYMPIC REVIEW39 VANCOUVER 2010 " The excitement for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is mounting. Our Centre of Excellence Programme is partnered with Skate Canada to train current and future Olympians. Local athletes are looking forward to skating with the best skaters in the world in their own back yard. We're pleased to be the official host practice facility for the Four Continents Skating Championship in February. We are also very excited to be hosting the Japan Skating Federation for the two weeks of the Winter Games as a practice and training facility for their Olympians. With the world focused on Vancouver and Whistler in just over one year, it is truly an exciting time for everyone involved in the local sport scene." " Our young, up and coming athletes are especially excited about seeing some of the best sportmen in the world competing at the Olympic hockey venue in both ice hockey and ice skating. From a curling point of view, our members are thrilled about having curling come to Vancouver and are interested to see how competitive Canada will be against the Chinese team. Former Olympian Karen Magnussen ( 1972 Olympic silver medalist) is the club's figure skating director and says the kids are looking forward to the figure skating events that will take place in Vancouver. It will be good for our city to have these legacies, especially in sports the kids haven't seen such as luge and bobsleigh. It creates an awareness of the other sports that are part of the Winter Games."
