Darren Turner ( racing driver) Jaeger LeCoultre Jaeger LeCoultre has been partnering with Aston Martin Racing since 2004. This year it presented Darren Turner with the limited series AMVOX Racing Chronograph that Turner sported when he raced in the 2009 edition of Le Mans 24 Hours. 66Isea& iIAUTUMN 2009 Rolex Submariner Rolesor It was at the Basel watch fair back in 1954 that Rolex unveiled what many people regard to be the quintessential underwater timepiece in the form of the now legendary Submariner, which arrived just as Scuba was being perfected. Guaranteed to be waterproof to 216m ( 660'), it remains the absolute reference for professional mechanical dive watches, and the look of the latest version remains remarkably similar to that of the original despite regular, subtle upgrades. Two new steel and gold models - known as Rolesor ( top) in Rolex- speak - are offered this year with improved bezels to match the choice of blue or black dials. www. rolex. com Blancpain500 Fathoms Blancpain's original 50 Fathoms preceded the Rolex Submariner by almost a year when it was introduced in 1953 for issue to French and American military frogmen - but it soon caught on with sport and professional divers; Jacques Cousteau even wore one while shooting his cult underwater film The Silent World, released in 1956. The model remains one of Blancpain's best- loved products, and now the tougher version ( which is waterproof to 500 fathoms/ 1,000 metres - below), gets a new 48mm titanium case. www. blancpain. com Upto date This year's Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie and Baselworld watch shows were replete with ocean- going timepieces. Simon de Burtonselects eleven that are inspired by the sea but still look great on terra firma, whilstwatch ambassadors and collectors take time out to tell us about their favourite timepieces Charley Boorman ( actor & travel writer) Bremont " Having had this incredible ability to destroy watches in the past, it has been a real pleasure to be able to find a watch that fascinates me mechanically, is British, and also withstands the knocks, vibration and water that I continually throw at it," says Boorman. " Well done, Bremont."
AUTUMN 2009I sea& iI67 Officine Panerai Radiomir Egiziano All vintage Panerai watches are collectable, but the model that tends to excite enthusiasts the most is the famed 60mm Egiziano. Just 50 of which were made in 1956 for use by divers in the Egyptian Navy. The scarcity of original, stainless steel examples has made the model something of a holy grail among Paneristi - but this year the brand announced it will make 500 recreations in titanium ( far lighter and more practical for day- to- day wear). The original had an eight- day, hand- wound movement made by Angelus, while the recreation ( top) uses a version created in- house by Panerai. www. panerai. com Parmigiani Pershing Tourbillon Parmigiani already had strong links with the ocean thanks to its Team Parmigiani racing catamaran and its sponsorship of the Vendée Globe competitor Bernard Stamm, but the house also has a tie- in with Pershing, which has led to a range of watch models inspired by the high- performance luxury yacht builder. The jewel in the crown of the Pershing collection is the skeletonised tourbillon ( below), which shows to the full the exceptional level of finish for which Parmigiani has rightly become famous. Of the 40 pieces being made with palladium 950 cases, 10 will be enhanced with diamond- set bezels. www. parmigiani. com Nick Faldo ( World Champion golfer) Audemars Piguet " Both on greens and in life as a whole, a watch is an indispensable tool for me," says Faldo. " Audemars Piguet has been a constant companion for many years, and this is doubtless because we share the same values: know how, which in my profession means a mixture of fast estimation times and decision- making ability; and daring, which is the essence of one's commitment to the game." Ben Ainslie ( British Olympic sailor) Corum Olympic Gold medallist Ben Ainslie has plans to win the America's Cup aboard Team Origin, with lasting support from Corum. " Since I first began wearing the Admiral's Cup Tides model, I have never been without it because it combines a complication movement that is unique and represents an indispensable navigation instru - ment, all encased in a timepiece with an aesthetic appeal that will never go out of style." Franck MullerMariner The famous Franck Muller Cintrée Curvex tonneau-shaped case gets a new black PVD look in this updated version of the Mariner ( right) that was originally released last year. The decidedly nautical theme can be seen in the compass points and a blue wind rose that decorate the dial, while the mighty 55.4mm- long case is anchored to the wrist with a black rubber strap. Deep down in the engine room you'll find a nice self- winding movement with 46- hour power reserve. www. franckmuller. com
