AUTUMN 2009I sea& iI67 Officine Panerai Radiomir Egiziano All vintage Panerai watches are collectable, but the model that tends to excite enthusiasts the most is the famed 60mm Egiziano. Just 50 of which were made in 1956 for use by divers in the Egyptian Navy. The scarcity of original, stainless steel examples has made the model something of a holy grail among Paneristi - but this year the brand announced it will make 500 recreations in titanium ( far lighter and more practical for day- to- day wear). The original had an eight- day, hand- wound movement made by Angelus, while the recreation ( top) uses a version created in- house by Panerai. www. panerai. com Parmigiani Pershing Tourbillon Parmigiani already had strong links with the ocean thanks to its Team Parmigiani racing catamaran and its sponsorship of the Vendée Globe competitor Bernard Stamm, but the house also has a tie- in with Pershing, which has led to a range of watch models inspired by the high- performance luxury yacht builder. The jewel in the crown of the Pershing collection is the skeletonised tourbillon ( below), which shows to the full the exceptional level of finish for which Parmigiani has rightly become famous. Of the 40 pieces being made with palladium 950 cases, 10 will be enhanced with diamond- set bezels. www. parmigiani. com Nick Faldo ( World Champion golfer) Audemars Piguet " Both on greens and in life as a whole, a watch is an indispensable tool for me," says Faldo. " Audemars Piguet has been a constant companion for many years, and this is doubtless because we share the same values: know how, which in my profession means a mixture of fast estimation times and decision- making ability; and daring, which is the essence of one's commitment to the game." Ben Ainslie ( British Olympic sailor) Corum Olympic Gold medallist Ben Ainslie has plans to win the America's Cup aboard Team Origin, with lasting support from Corum. " Since I first began wearing the Admiral's Cup Tides model, I have never been without it because it combines a complication movement that is unique and represents an indispensable navigation instru - ment, all encased in a timepiece with an aesthetic appeal that will never go out of style." Franck MullerMariner The famous Franck Muller Cintrée Curvex tonneau-shaped case gets a new black PVD look in this updated version of the Mariner ( right) that was originally released last year. The decidedly nautical theme can be seen in the compass points and a blue wind rose that decorate the dial, while the mighty 55.4mm- long case is anchored to the wrist with a black rubber strap. Deep down in the engine room you'll find a nice self- winding movement with 46- hour power reserve. www. franckmuller. com 68Isea& iIAUTUMN 2009 Linde WerdelinOktopus watch and Sea Instrument Linde Werdelin was founded by Danes Morten Linde, a designer, and Jorn Werdelin, a former banker. Their vision was to produce a stylish, mechanical watch that would also act as a platform for a range of sophisticated clip- on, clip- off wrist computers designed to display and log data for a range of activities from skiing to flying. The new Reef Sea Instrument ( right) is aimed at divers and gives everything from depth readings to decompression timings, underwater temp- erature and surface intervals. Unclip it, and the robust and stylish Oktopus dive watch is revealed beneath. www. lindewerdelin. com ULYSSE NARDIN Maxi Marine Diver Chronograph At Ulysse Nardin, the new Maxi Marine Diver Chronograph ( left) is a rugged all weather sports diving chronograph with a self- winding mo - vement that embodies the fusion of the manufacturer's ultimate chronograph and diver collections. Crafted in stainless steel or 18- carat rose gold, it is water- resistant to 200 meters. A specially developed rubber- type coating deco - rates the rotating bezel and, combined with the three level watch face, gives it modern aesthetics. www. ulysse- nardin. com John Travolta ( actor) Breitling A seasoned pilot, Travolta wears a Breitling Navitimer. Originally launched in 1952, this watch has now become a cult object for aviation enthusiasts. Michelle Yeoh ( actress) Audemars Piguet " The precision of a watch mechanism resembles that required by martial arts," says Yeoh. " This quest for perfection daily guides my activities." Jacky Ickx ( Formula 1 champion) Chopard " Chopard, for me, is equivalent to the constant aim for perfection, looking toward the future," says Ickx. " My favourite piece is, of course, the Jacky Ickx watch, which I had the joy to create with my friend Karl- Friedrich Scheufele [ far left]." Jaeger- LeCoultre Master Compressor Diving Alarm Navy Seals This new dive watch harks back to 1959 when Jaeger- LeCoultre produced the Memovox Deep Sea, the first diving watch with a mechanical alarm to signal to the wearer when it was time to come up for air. The 44mm titanium- cased watch ( left) is one of a range of three stealthy looking pieces designed to mark the brand's new partnership with America's elite military dive unit, the US Navy Seals. The other models are the chronograph and Pro Geographic world timer, each of which measures an imposing 46.3mm in diameter. www. jaeger- lecoultre. com |
