34OLYMPIC REVIEW VANCOUVER 2010 OSIYAM " O SIYAM" IS A TRADITIONAL GREETING OF MANY ABORIGINAL PEOPLES, A MESSAGE OF WELCOME AND RESPECT THAT PERFECTLY CAPTURES THE SPIRIT BEHIND THE ARTWORKS BY FIRST NATIONS, MÉTIS AND INUIT ARTISTS THAT WILL GRACE THE VENUES OF THE XXI OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES AND THE X PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES. OLYMPIC REVIEW SHOWCASES A SELECTION OF THESE WORKS AS PART OF OUR GAMES PREVIEW WHISTLER SLIDINGCENTRE Created by the Mi'kmaq Association for Cultural Studies, this is a stylised depiction of a traditional hieroglyph meaning " the people". Missionaries found the Mi'kmaq children writing these symbols on birchbark and began to teach them prayers by using the symbols to translate. Many families still have old prayer books with these symbols.
