Being environmentally conscious has many benefits for the bottom line as well as for Mother Earth. Here are a few small things you can do that can have big impacts on both: • Consider lowering your thermostat a bit more in the winter and raising it a bit more in the summer. Every degree each way can save you one to three percent on your electric bill, and it helps keep planet- warming CO2 out of the atmosphere. • It's cheaper to install a filtered water cooler than to purchase bottled water, and encouraging employees to bring their own mugs and cups and re- use them can help reduce the 60 million water bottles that get thrown away nationwide each day. • Offer your employees incentives to take alternative transportation. If they take mass transit, carpool or even bicycle once or twice in a five- day work week, it can reduce emissions and pollution — not to mention stress, which gives you a more productive employee. • Donating your old office computers and cell phones can make for a nice tax deduction while assisting a local non- profit who can't afford the latest technology. It'll also keep potentially dangerous lead, mercury and cadmium leakage from televisions and circuit boards from getting into landfills. • Rechargeable batteries for small office appliances can be re- used for much less than purchasing hundreds of packages of AA batteries per year. The three billion batteries thrown away each year can pour toxic metals and elements into the soil and water. • Don't waste! Turning off lights and computers at the end of the work day saves electricity and wear and tear. • Teleconferencing instead of flying to that meeting in another state saves money and lost productivity due to employees' being out of the office or jet- lagged. Being serious about reducing your carbon footprint also sends an important message that your company is a good corporate citizen. The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce launched its own environmental initiative, the Green Roundtable, in 2008. Environmentally conscious members meet regularly to exchange ideas, get educated, make connections and share resources for making a positive impact on the environment.
