Both a destination in itself as well as a portal to a world of information, the site attracts thousands of visitors each month. It contains an updated directory of all 3,400 GPCC members, an interactive calendar of events, information for anyone looking to relocate to the Valley of the Sun and much more. 2009 will see the introduction of more robust multimedia content, including educational " Webinars" that will allow busy members to learn about interesting topics or attend some events without leaving their offices. Regular e- mail communications keep members up-to- date on news and upcoming events. Everything members need for a quick read on what's happening is delivered to their inboxes weekly. Occasional special alerts on breaking news or important legislative issues mean business people are never out of the loop. The business- oriented social networking site, LinkedIn, is growing in importance and use among Chamber members and staff. Business people can establish new relationships, formalize and organize their circle of contacts and join or form online groups within the Chamber umbrella. A monthly membership publication has been a part of Chamber communications since the 1940s. Regular events and programs offer avenues for personal and professional development and recognition, chances to hear nationally known speakers on important topics and opportunities to build their network of business connections. Celebrating excelence The annual IMPACT and ATHENA Awards celebrate the Valley's outstanding small businesses and business women, respectively. For more than two decades, both programs have served as an inspiration and recognition of perseverance, accomplishment and community involvement. Each spring, the IMPACT Awards honor small businesses that demonstrate drive, passion and commitment. The 2008 recipients included Community Tire & Auto Service Specialists ( Small Business of the Year), Elontec ( Community Involvement), Challenge Charter School ( Response to Adversity) and PerfectPower ( Innovation). ATHENA Awards Fall brings the ATHENA Awards, a local celebration in an international tradition. For the first time, three successful business women earned distinction in 2008, as Private Sector ( Candace Lew, MD), Public Sector ( Ina Mae Copeland, Valley Christian Centers) and Young Professional ( Courtney Klein, New Global Citizens) awards were handed out for the first time. An ongoing program, ATHENA Powerlink ® is a customized mentoring experience designed to help women- owned businesses grow and thrive.
