The I- 10 expansion project is being developed to provide additional capacity between Sarival Avenue and Loop 101. The freeway expansion includes both adding outside lanes and widening the median to improve east/ west traffic flow in the West Valley. Planned projects include inside widening, outside widening and interchange construction. • In addition to serving as a major north- south artery for metro Phoenix commuters and travelers, Interstate 17 serves as Phoenix's connection to Interstate 40 and Interstate 10, two of the nation's major east- west routes. Phase 1, which runs through 2010, includes lane widening, the addition of carpool lanes, and other improvements, such as the interim Loop 303 interchange. • Red Mountain Freeway/ Loop 202 from State Route 51 to Loop 101 is undergoing ongoing widening with general- purpose lanes, and from Loop 101 to Gilbert Road with high- occupancy vehicle ( HOV) lanes. During commute times, Arizona's high- occupancy vehicle ( HOV) lanes are open to vehicles with two or more people in them; motorcycles; vehicles with alternative fuel license plates; Honda Insights, Honda Civic Hybrids and Toyota Priuses; and Valley Metro buses. ( During off- peak times, they're open to anyone.) • Improvements to Pima Freeway/ Loop 101 in the northeast Valley run the gamut, including installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems to keep traffic flowing by providing incident management personnel with information about real- time traffic conditions. Other projects include the addition of numerous HOV lanes and improvements to interchanges with auxiliary lanes. • The US 60 widening project includes general- purpose lanes in each direction, generally between Hardy and McClintock drives in Tempe. Auxiliary lanes also will be added at select locations to assist drivers with merging at on ramps and off ramps. More than 101 miles of new freeway have been built in the Greater Phoenix area since 1996, creating a convenient system that accommodates commerce as well as tourism — and providing a vision that plans for the road ahead.
