LITHUANIAN SEASIDE The Lithuanian coast extends for 99 kilometres along the eastern coast of the Baltic and the towns of Klaipeda, Palanga, and Nida all boast of their clean beaches marked with Blue Flags, marking the highest EU rating. Palanga has beautiful white sand beaches which had already gained popularity at the beginning of the 19th century. The town receives plentiful sun and steady, cooling sea breezes. The air is fragrant with pine and sea- salt. The pearl of Lithuanian seacoast - the Curonian Spit - last year has been recognized as undiscovered seaside gem, by two British national newspapers ' The Sunday Times' and ' The Guardian'. In the year 2000, the Curonian Spit was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most beautiful and unique landscapes of Europe. It consists of huge, shifting sand dunes which can reach as high as 60m. As well as being beautiful to behold, the Spit is home to exceptionally clean beaches that come into their own during the hot summer months, along with well- preserved fishing villages and modest, but charming, resort towns, such as Juodkrante, Preila and Nida.
