In addition, starting in May 2009, theParks and Recreation Department isoffering a $ 20 fitness pass allowing usersto attend up to 10 sessions of any fitness- classes the department offers. So rather than signing up for just oneyoga, swimming or aerobics class, thecardholder can go to a yoga class, and thenswimming and then aerobics and then anadult water polo class or any of the otherfitness classes until they reach the 10mark. Visalia Unified has 25elementary schools, four middleschools, four traditional high schools, one continuation school, one adultschool and two charter schools. To keep up with the growing studentpopulation, the district opened two ele- mentary schools in fall 2008: Annie R. Mitchell in the southeast and Manuel F. Hernandez in the northwest. Mt. Whitney High School was nameda 2009 California Distinguished School, a honor from the California Departmentof Education that recognizes outstand- ing public schools in the state. In 2008, Linwood Elementary School receivedthe honor. District officials are in the planningstages of bringing a new charter schoolto the district by teaming up with Col- lege of the Sequoias.
