The founder of Allensworth was Col. Allen Allensworth, a former slave whodistinguished himself by joining the U. S. Navy during the Civil War and servingin the U. S. Army as a chaplain throughthe Spanish- American War, includingservice in the Philippines. The township of Allensworth wasconceived by its founder in 1908 as autopian community, operated solely byAfrican Americans. For nearly two decades, the placethrived. But in 1914, the town of Allensworth— which at its peak had 160 full- timeresidents, a bountiful alfalfa- based agri- cultural economy, three free- flowingArtesian wells, a lucrative train terminal, a hotel, a school and a library — wasdealt a blow from which it never fullyrecovered. On Sept. 13, 1914, Col. Allensworth wasstruck and killed by a motorcycle rideron his way to speak in the town of Mon- rovia. Allensworth eventually faded fromview and was finally withdrawn fromCalifornia maps in 1973, only to berevived by its conversion into a Califor- nia state park in 1980. Over the past three decades, advo- cates have promoted building a replicacommunity on the park's 800 acres. Thepark has a church, school, meetingplace, a couple of shops and a few rudi- mentary houses. Allensworth Historic StatePark preserves cultureCol.
