A : With the rise in identity theft, many parents are wonder-ing if they can place the same type of " securi-ty freeze" on their child's credit file as they can on their own. Good question. The answer is - Some-times. A parent or legal guardian can, in fact, freeze a child's file - if a file exists. But hopefully, a child doesn't have a credit file to freeze. A credit file is only created when there is a request for a new credit relationship, such as a credit card. One way to make sure a child has not been the victim of identity Consumer ALERT! theft is to make frequent requests for free credit reports under the child's name and SSN from www. annualcreditreport. com. If the credit agencies are unable to pro-cess the request - most likely, no file exists. Good News! If a credit report exists for a child, it is almost certainly an in-dication of fraud. In that case, the parent or legal guardian can place a security freeze on the child's credit file. The individual has to provide proof that they are the parent or legal guardian and that fraud has occurred. Also, a police report should be filed with a local law en-forcement agency. A credit bureau cannot create a file for a child if a file does not al-ready exist. v Want a Power Against Fraud Presentation? Call the Denver DA's Office: 720- 913- 9036. From the Office of Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey Mitch Morrissey the online Community Does it seem that people seldom get out and meet their neigh-bors anymore? The concept of " Community" has apparently changed while we weren't look-ing. And while there is truly no substitute for shaking a per-son's hand and looking them in the eye, the " online community" has begun to supply some of what we are missing. What is the online communi-ty? It is, basically, an assortment of websites you can visit and in-teract with other people on the internet. These websites, often called " social networking sites," usually allow you to have a free login, post selective information about yourself ( your ideas, likes and dislikes, resume, etc) and chat with other people. Some of these websites bring together peo-ple with specific interests, such as pets, music, religion, medical Computers Marianna Madison problems. Sometimes it helps to know that there are other people out there experiencing the exact same thing as you. Another web-site allows you to find old class-mates. Yet another allows you to be introduced and recommended by past or present co- workers, for potential jobs. For every interest, there seems to be a website and forum. Probably the most well- known social networking site is Face-book. Here you find your existing friends and family who are on the internet. You can meet and be-come friends with their friends, by sending them " friend requests" which they can then accept if they wish. Each person gets his own page, where he posts his ideas and interests, his picture, etc. All your online friends show up on this page, as well as their comments and anecdotes. Don't underestimate little ladies with big ideas!! There are a dozen little ladies living in Sedalia, a tiny town just south of Highlands Ranch on Santa Fe, who had a big idea about a little house, built in the mid 1800s, that was in a bad state of repair and was Caroline's Corner about to be torn down. The ladies said, " Wouldn't it be a terrific thing to move the house from the spot where it is to a prominent lo-cation near the fire house and fix it up like a museum? We could save it!", and in October 2007, they did! The Sedalia Historic Soci-ety set out to do something that seemed impossible and they cre-ated much excitement and enthu-siasm in not only their commu-nity but in folks from Highlands Ranch and the Douglas County Commissioners. They now have a remarkable museum/ library/ meet-ing place which struts its stuff with a new location, new coat of paint, antiques, photographs and history of the town they love. Guess what they paid for the house? $ 1.00. That's right only one dollar. But, then they had to earn enough money to pay for the moving, the new foundation and the restoration. They did a lot of baking and received donations of money and time and have created a delightful invitation to all who come to Sedalia. When you turn off Santa Fe you can't miss the house sitting on the right, by the railroad tracks, with the American flag flying proudly overhead. Come to the Highlands Ranch Historical Society meeting on Monday, June 21 at 7: 00 p. m. at the Highlands Ranch South-ridge Rec. Center, 4800 McArthur Ranch Road, and see a PowerPoint presentation by Douggie Young and other super ladies about their successful move and restoration. It might inspire you to take action in your community, just remember. don't underestimate little ladies. All are welcome. We would ap-preciate a call at 303- 471- 5611, so we have plenty of refreshments. vCaroline T. Smith, is the president of the Highlands Ranch Historical Society.
