Amie Pilla, Library CEO, Berthoud Community Library DistrictLeave it to someone who lives her life surrounded by children's books to name her dogs Scratch and Sniff. As the CEO of the Berthoud Community Library District, Amie Pilla isn't just creative in her canine-naming abilities. A modern-day Renaissance woman, Pilla plays the piano and flute, sings, knits, crochets and draws. "I like anything crafty," she says, "and anything that keeps my hands busy."Not surprisingly, Pilla is also an avid reader who loves traveling. In her "spare" time, Pilla likes to hike with her husband, something that she truly appreciates about the area since accepting the job a year ago. "I previously lived in Illinois and Georgia, working in urban, suburban and rural public libraries," she explains, "but I'm happy to be back in a small library in a close-knit community."Pilla says the strong sense of community is one of the things she loves most about Berthoud. "People here not only know each other, but also care about what happens to their neighbors and in their community."Steve Mulvihill, Mayor, Town of BerthoudBeing a leader comes naturally to Berthoud's mayor, Steve Mulvihill. After graduating from high school, he joined the service in 1964. He did two tours in Vietnam with the Naval Special Warfare Group, then moved to the Bay Area. After attending West Valley College, Mulvihill began working in engi-neering. In 1978, he moved to Colorado and never looked back. He worked in the information and computer industry until retiring in 2010.It's no coincidence that Berthoud's mayor shares a last name with the Berthoud Chamber's executive director. Steve and Deanne have been married for nearly three decades, proudly raising three sons and enjoying being grandparents to eight grandchildren. The couple says that it's hard not to get involved when you love a community so much."Berthoud is a very special and unique place in Colorado," says Mulvihill, who bought a home here in 2015 before being elected mayor just a year later."I love the town, the community and the people of Berthoud," opines Mulvihill. "It's really just my kind of place!"And luckily for the residents of Berthoud, Mulvihill is just their kind of mayor!Steve Charles, Fire Chief, Berthoud Fire Protection DistrictDespite having a career in law enforcement as a patrol officer and criminal investigator, Steve Charles has still put in more years of fire service than almost anyone you'll meet: 32 years under his belt, including 25 as the Fire Chief of the Berthoud Fire Protection District. "I have an Associate of Applied Science Degree in fire Protection and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science Technology," says Chief Charles. He's a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer program. There's much, much more, but you get the point. If there's ever a fire, explosion or hazmat incident, Chief Charles is the guy you want running the show. But don't go thinking he's just another tough guy who's married to his work. In fact, fire service isn't his first love. He's been married to his high school sweetheart, Marlene, for 46 years. They have two sons and a daughter and six grandchildren. So how does a man like Chief Charles have fun? In typical Colorado fashion: "Road trips, fishing, horseback riding and attending PBR bull riding," he says, "Really, anything that's family time."
